Planning my new shot


Hi guys,
after small break it is time to get back hard to work. I decided to animate typical body mechanics shot cause body mechanics were problematic for me in c3. I decided to do animatic first and stick to the rule 50% planning 50% animating. It is amazing how much fun I have when I do this small litlle drawings. Is it great animation? obviously not, but it is a great roadmap. Timing is more or less established, so are arcs, spacing, poses. I still can change what I want in the blocking, but I have the roadmap, and for me it is super important, without it I would be lost in blocking. I am going to start blocking on monday. I wonder how fast I will be able to block out this shot. Any feedback always welcome. Thanks in advance.

    this is looking awesome. To crit the planning itself - it has so much lovely detail in the animation, this is going to be a very solid foundation. The first time the pelvis goes forward (the antic to the antic) - that seems a bit much. Unless he´s sort of leaning forward to look at was he´s doing, then it´s ok. But if he´s going so much forward and then back again, just to anticipate the run, then that very first going forward needs to be toned down. But I like the idea that he´s looking at the ball at that point and planning his move.
    At the end, he´s bouncing way too much, you can kill at least one entire bounce circle. The rest is fabulous!

    But then, this on a more general note - now unless I am mistaken here, you´re trying to plan your shot thoroughly with this. And this is where you are aiming in the wrong direction. Planning is there explore ideas, and to get your shot on a solid ground before you get into the program. What you´re doing here is a 2D animation without the cleaning and painting! It´s way too much work for practical application. I don´t think that´s the way you should establish your workflow, cuz it won´t survive in the industry! All that only taken than I am NOT mistaken, and this IS your planning. Other than that, I take it all back.
    Now the 3rd reason could be that you´re aiming for a Jason Ryan workflow, in which case you´re also definitly on the right track! I´ll rest my case until I see how you proceed with this!

  • Thanks so much for feedback guys. Few words about the workflow. I know it is heavy, I mean, it is mostly on two's :). The thing is that it takes only couple minutes to draw inbetweens in PAP, so actually it is not that much work in comparison to planning on 4s or planning of keys only. I think that with some practice I will be able to prepare such animatic in few hours only. I think it is not that much time in case of 150 frames shot. I know Jason Ryan draws animatics for his shots (quite heavy animatics by the way, 2s 3s) and still he is the fastets Disney's animator. I was trying not to use animatics for both assignments in c3 and I totally failed, I was lost every single time when I had to block my shot. It was just to much experimenting inside maya, which was super time consuming. I want to run when I block my shot, I want to experiment, but I want to know where I am going. With the complicated rig it takes much MUCH more time to set up the pose in Maya than to draw it in PAP. Without animatics I was so concerned with all the controls, curves, etc. that I was loosing track of principles etc. if you know what I mean. I know it may sounds weird, but that is what happened to me to many times in the past and I want to avoid that at all costs. I also belive that I can block my shot many many times faster when I have animatic, and what is even more important, I can block the shot much much better. Cool thing about animatic is that I can "FEEL" the motion during my planning stage. It is not only the set of disjointed drawings on paper. For me this "feel" part is the key. If I would start blocking without animatic this "feel" would be lost for me, because I would be overwhelmed with all the controls etc.

    Awesome planning! I think the more planning, the better. It's just a starting-point anyway, but I think it gives you a better foundation to base your changes/improvements on later.

    As this is just planning, that reads very well and clear to me, I'll come back later to check out your blocking and give you some critique then.
